{"id":322,"date":"2019-03-02T19:29:50","date_gmt":"2019-03-02T19:29:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/?p=322"},"modified":"2020-08-28T22:01:51","modified_gmt":"2020-08-28T22:01:51","slug":"planning-on-hanging-your-technical-shingle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/index.php\/2019\/03\/02\/planning-on-hanging-your-technical-shingle\/","title":{"rendered":"Planning on Hanging Your Technical Shingle?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-325\" src=\"https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/iStock-483762600-1024x664.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"428\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/iStock-483762600-1024x664.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/iStock-483762600-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/iStock-483762600-768x498.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If you are like most engineers, you may be frustrated with the day-to-day grind of the office place.\u00a0\u00a0No one seems to listen to ideas and concerns.\u00a0\u00a0No one seems to have the energy or drive to take things to the next level of excellence.\u00a0Promotions and opportunities never seem to come your way.\u00a0\u00a0The extra work and effort are hardly appreciated, if at all.\u00a0 Management seems to be making a lot of money without doing much or even bothering to understand what\u2019s being done.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-326\" src=\"https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Freedom-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Freedom-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Freedom-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Freedom.jpg 816w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">From that line of thinking comes an idea.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cMaybe it is time to move on, to strike out on my own, to be my own boss, to make my ideas come to life.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Why not?\u00a0\u00a0With the internet and a home office, it is easier now than it has ever been.\u00a0 No more bureaucracy, no more carrying the weight of others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The reality is that many engineers who venture into their own <u>design<\/u> consulting business are unsuccessful only to return, defeated, to the 9-to-5 workforce, if not relegated to the life of part-time work.\u00a0 Design services differ from software services.\u00a0 Once a design is completed, it can be replicated with little or no modification thereafter, whereas, the software allows for opportunities for improvement, enhances, and modifications long after the hardware has been designed and manufactured.\u00a0 For the purposes of this commentary, the focus will be on design consulting services.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-large wp-image-327\" src=\"https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/motherboard_2-wallpaper-2560x1440-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/motherboard_2-wallpaper-2560x1440-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/motherboard_2-wallpaper-2560x1440-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/motherboard_2-wallpaper-2560x1440-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Nine Dot Connects is in a niche market carved out by knowing the PCB industry and supplying training and design services that the industry is lacking.\u00a0 It also happens to be founded by an individual who could no more stand the corporate work environment.\u00a0 However, Nine Dot Connects is an anomaly. \u00a0The opportunities and circumstances which allowed it enough runway to take off and make it what it is now are irreplicable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In a niche community like PCB design, Nine Dot Connects interacts with many individuals who have hung their own shingle in the hopes of making it out on their own.\u00a0 All too often, it is not longed lived.\u00a0 Consistent patterns have emerged from these observations.\u00a0 It can be boiled down to three key factors necessary to be successful.\u00a0\u00a0Even then, there is no guarantee of success. Even the successful entrepreneurs, who are considered to be big risk-takers, did not blindly jump into their idea.\u00a0\u00a0They kept their day time job until they felt the risk was manageable &#8211; \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/melanie-curtin\/should-you-quit-your-day-job-this-study-of-over-5000-entrepreneurs-has-a-surprising-answer.html\"><em>A 15-Year Study of 5,000 Entrepreneurs Finally Answers the Question: Is It Better to Quit Your Day Job or Keep It? \u2013 Data doesn\u2019t lie<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-328\" src=\"https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Taking-a-Leap-of-Faith-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Taking-a-Leap-of-Faith-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Taking-a-Leap-of-Faith.jpg 704w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The first key factor \u2013 you must be an expert in what you do.\u00a0 No one is going to pay you to learn and they are not looking for an average-skilled consultant.\u00a0\u00a0Companies make use of engineering consultants due to the company\u2019s lack of necessary skills and knowledge within their employee base.\u00a0\u00a0For example, maybe they can layout printed circuit boards; however, they do not have the skill set required for a DDR4 memory or 2000 pin FPGA component board layout.\u00a0\u00a0Therefore, they are going to seek consultants outside of the company only when they lack the knowledge within the company.\u00a0 Expect the jobs to be tough and complex.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Along with their expertise, a consultant must have a high level of confidence in themselves and must portray this confidence to the customer.\u00a0 Internal confidence is the whole-hearted belief that the knowledge you possess will get you through tough, difficult, and sometimes downright ugly projects. As a consultant, your resources are limited to your knowledge, experience, and ideas, the books you may have, what can be gleaned from the internet, and the ability to think outside of the proverbial box. \u00a0Above all, technical hurdles cannot be a source of extreme stress.\u00a0\u00a0If you are constantly fretting every time a tough issue comes along, keep your day job.\u00a0\u00a0If you are stressed at work, you have a consolation that at the end of the week there is a paycheck and a two-day weekend to regroup, rethink, or simply recoup.\u00a0\u00a0As a consultant, you are not getting paid until it\u2019s done.\u00a0 In the consulting world, \u2018Weekends\u2019 is simply defined as being the end of one week and the beginning of another.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-329\" src=\"https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Confidence-256x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"256\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Confidence-256x300.png 256w, https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Confidence.png 349w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Confidence must be external as well.\u00a0\u00a0It is known that body language plays a very important role in personal communication.\u00a0\u00a0Yes, words need to be expressed with confidence, but body language, voice, and tone make up 92% (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightattitudes.com\/2008\/10\/04\/7-38-55-rule-personal-communication\/\">Elements of Personal Communication by Dr. Albert Mehrabian<\/a>) of the presentation.\u00a0\u00a0We must put ourselves in the shoes of our customers. How can you be confident in someone\u2019s skills when they are not confident in themselves? \u00a0Why would you expect a potential customer to be any different in their scrutiny when offering your services?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The second key factor \u2013 business acumen.\u00a0\u00a0Unfortunately, most engineers are not business savvy, nor have they been taught any business skills.\u00a0\u00a0They do not know the true value of their services and generally underbid the job.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Even if there is some business savvy to be found, it is extremely difficult to focus on two things simultaneously.\u00a0\u00a0If you are working on a project, you are not working on finding new business.\u00a0\u00a0If you are working on a new business, you are not making money on a job.\u00a0\u00a0At the end of the day, you only get paid for what you do for a paying customer. And that assumes that they are honest.\u00a0\u00a0In the heat of a project, they may add requirements to the project with a verbal promise that they will compensate, only to conveniently forget when the time comes to pay.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-330\" src=\"https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Dollar-300x158.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Dollar-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Dollar-768x405.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Dollar.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The consultant must intimately understand the relationship between the project\u2019s time, its complexity, its risks, and most importantly, its monetary value.\u00a0\u00a0But before all the previously mentioned factors, the consultant must be able to determine if the job is even viable, to begin with.\u00a0 It happens all too often \u2013 the consultant underbids the job and puts so much time into the job in order to deliver and get paid, they work for less than flipping burgers at a fast-food place.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Of course, there is no guarantee that what is being proposed will be accepted.\u00a0\u00a0Unfortunately, depending on the level of job complexity, there are others who will underbid you because they are THAT desperate for a buck.\u00a0\u00a0In the end, the customer does not care.\u00a0\u00a0They want it done as cheaply as possible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The consulting business is a service business.\u00a0 With few exceptions, there are no royalties or other post incomes for the services performed.\u00a0 For example, when the plumber or electrician or mechanic is paid for a service rendered, there is no exception that additional payments or fees will be requested thereafter. Engineering consulting is no different, regardless of the complexity or skill necessary to perform the task.\u00a0 Engineering services are usually on a per-project basis. There is no guarantee of any follow-on work, let alone a follow-on project.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-331\" src=\"https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Start-Finish.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"827\" height=\"552\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Start-Finish.jpg 827w, https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Start-Finish-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Start-Finish-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 827px) 100vw, 827px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The third key factor \u2013 Marketing.\u00a0\u00a0The business factor assumes that you have the attention of a customer who is asking for you to bid for a job.\u00a0\u00a0All too often, many engineers who start out as design consultants hit the ground running because they have a good skill set and they have a \u201clong term\u201d customer.\u00a0\u00a0However, in the tech field, that relationship is usually limited to two or three years.\u00a0\u00a0At some point, the customer may pull back on design work due to general economic conditions, decide to hire someone in-house for design work, get into designs that are beyond your skillset, merge with another company that has no interest in outside consultants, etc. In short, the well goes dry.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-332\" src=\"https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Social-Media-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Social-Media-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ninedotconnectssandbox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Social-Media.jpg 704w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Marketing is all about ensuring future business.\u00a0\u00a0For a single individual, social media has made this more viable than ever before, but the results are not immediate.\u00a0\u00a0As a consultant, marketing consists of convincing potential customers that you are the right person for the job.\u00a0\u00a0Therefore, you must convey this knowledge, and in many cases give some of this knowledge away.\u00a0 This is the investment trade-off \u2013 the money saved on advertising using traditional media platforms (i.e. mailing lists and printing) is exchanged for providing knowledge on social media platforms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This can be done through YouTube, which many people and companies use to show their skills.\u00a0\u00a0But, one video is not enough. This is the old university professor mantra \u201cpublish or perish.\u201d\u00a0 The material must constantly flow from you to show your knowledge.\u00a0\u00a0In this information-hungry world, everyone wants to be constantly fed with new information.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And it goes beyond a bunch of useful videos.\u00a0\u00a0A website and mechanisms need to be in place to ensure that the website will be found in the search engines (SEO).\u00a0\u00a0The site needs to look professional.\u00a0\u00a0If it looks like a one-person show, it will turn people off.
