The Age of the Fabricated Mechatronics Board

Have you heard of the term Fabricated Mechatronic Boards (FMB)? We suspect not. We coined it for a good reason. FMBs have been around for quite some time and are commonly known as PCBs (Printed Circuit Boards). But, as we at Nine Dot Connects have observed, this is rapidly becoming a misnomer with important consequences.

  • PCBs are not printed; they are fabricated. In fact, the process is subtractive, meaning that copper is etched away to make the traces.
  • PCBs are not just circuits; they are the medium in which the electronics come together. Since it involves physical space, it is certainly mechanical as well as electrical. Thus it is mechatronic in nature.
  • PCBs are still boards, though they are certainly not limited to traditional rectangular or square shapes.

Therefore, we are witnessing the advent of mechatronics. Why is this important to you? Because companies use demarcations to define positions within the company. We in PCB design have experienced this as the roles of circuit design and layout have become a single position. As the next generation of technology comes to reality in robotics and IoT, the same will eventually happen to mechanical and electrical domains.

We at Nine Dot Connects will be on the road throughout the U.S. to bring this unfolding story to you. During this lunch & learn presentation, you will learn how the electronics industry has changed, where it is going, and the available tools to become part of this new age of mechatronics, regardless of your current trade skill. With change comes opportunity, with opportunity comes growth. The field of mechatronics is open to those who want to expand their horizons.

Who should attend:

  • Anyone who has a role or interest in PCB / FMB design. For those currently immersed in it, this is an opportunity to see where the industry is going. It is a chance to see where the opportunities lie for those new to or interested in the field.

Why should you attend:

  • It may surprise you to know that design of this nature is not taught in academia! The industry needs engineers who have mechatronic skills and experience, meaning a good balance between electrical and mechanical design. We hope that this free lunch will also inspire those who are seeking an edge in these fields.
